I'm on a new Macbook Pro and running OS X, version 10.7.2. After many trials and errors, my techie son finally installed the new Growl. It works fine when using Chrome, Canary or Firefox. However, when using Safari Mail, the mail program keeps disabling it due to incompatibility. I should also say I'm using Gmail, so Mail is not my primary carrier.
