You mean like in the example script linked for download here:
http://growl.info/downloads or the applescript documentation here:
http://growl.info/documentation/applescript-support.php in which we
show the syntax of tell application id "com.Growl.GrowlHelperApp" to
send a message to either 1.2.x or older or 1.3.x and newer?  (there is
also the isRunning check in both those showing how to find out if
growl is running in applescript for either 1.2.x and older or 1.3.x
and newer)
