you most likely have growl 1.2.2 or earlier on your system, which is a preference pane and not an app.
to turn off update notifications: * open system preferences * click on Growl (under others) * click on the 'about' tab * untick the 'check for updates' checkbox if you have no idea how growl got on your system, please see http://growl.info/thirdpartyinstallations.php for more information about the possible cause.
