I am having this same issue. I have uninstalled several times. There is no Growl.app in my applications folder and can not download again because the app store tells me it's already installed. Stuck in lala land.

I recently upgraded from 10.7.4 to 10.8.1 and noticed Growl 1.4 did not appear to be working (notifications went completely silent). I tried several times to launch Growl.app and nothing happened; I then thoroughly removed the app and all associated files in order to re-install from the AppStore. Now I can't even re-install because the (stupid) AppStore thinks it's still installed when clearly it's not. There is absolutely no trace of any Growl start-up apps, plists, prefs, etc. on my system.

How do I fix this?

Look in your Launchpad on the dock, as sometimes apps don't show in Applications.
