I have found that it is happening with my incoming email sound as well, I
am guessing it's not a Growl problem. Has anyone heard of this problem with
mac? I looked around on Google and it seems that this has been a problem
for many years. Until I restart my applications that loose sound they are
gone. Maybe when I put my computer to sleep it happens? It is a very
annoying problem!

Since the problem starting with mail I added a AppleScript rule in mail
witch seems to be working so far. Maybe an option for AppleScript can be
added to Growl?

Thanks!
