I have had experience with this problem, and found the following always works.
1. Many times apps are installed but don't show in the apps menu but they can be found in the Launchpad, I have no idea why. 2. Disconnect any drives connected to the Mac as the app store looks for all locations 3. If the app is found in Launchpad remove it from there is necessary. I hope that helps.
