Growl 1.4 and newer switched to a new method of start at login, which
does not use the user's login items from system preferences (It uses
launchd).  Please check and see if it is listed there, and if removing
it from there helps.  The new system can be checked to make sure it is
there using the following command in Terminal.app, launchctl list |
grep growl, one of the items it lists should be
com.Growl.GrowlLauncher.
