So two things here. I'd like to talk about the google groups usability thing in 
another thread, so if you could start one I'd like to figure out what better 
alternatives you have in mind, especially since we also provide a direct 
support@growl email address for support requests as well. 

On the update issue, you likely have a corrupt install. Growl 2.0.1 does not 
have update checking code in it, only the App Store app does and that's it. So 
if you have an old version of Growl lying around that's your culprit here. 
Follow these steps to try to fix the problem:
