I believe the hang has been fixed for 2.1.  As for HWGrowler, check
your start at login preferences for your user and see if it is listed
there.  Having 2 instances of HWGrowler running could contribute to
the hang, because is triggered by receiving too many notifications
simultaneously, and HWGrowl tends to be noisy on startup.  One option
to help potentially alleviate this is to turn of HWGrowler's
preference for showing connected devices on launch.
