You mention an oft reported action that, I fear, has led to many sorrows.
People are often telling others to "just trash" some file or other in an
attempt to help a problem app. First, the advice is miss-leading. Second,
it is un-needed. Third, it usually fails to tell what might be lost.
Fourth, it doesn't explain why, what to do next or how to "fix the fix."

All that is really needed is to MOVE the supposedly malformed file to a
different location. Almost any location is fine. All that is required is
that the app doesn't use the problematic file the next time it runs. Moving
the file to the Trash is NOT a safe place to store anything. In fact, it's
not a place to STORE anything! :-) Maybe I'm just more aware of this
possibly dangerous action since this is the day our garbage men come and
EMPTY OUR TRASH! Oops! I think I had something in there I need! It had all
the details on the various settings I used in that app! Oh well, it's nice
to have a clean Trash can... LOL!

Of course, even if the Trash gets emptied, you may be able to use Time
Machine to retrieve the file. But why take the chance and spend the time
when all you had to do is move it one folder higher or lower?! 8-) K.I.S.S.
