Thanks for the fix, TVNshack! Works like a charm, cheers to you! One mistake I made: after making the changes you suggested, I tested it out by sending myself an email but didn't see any Growl notification appear. Then I realized that in Mail preferences, "Only notify when Mail.app is in the background" was checked, and I was doing my test while the Mail app was the active window. After unchecking that option, I retested and it worked perfect. Of course I could also have kept that option checked and just tested with Mail in the background for proof that it was working again.
