So you're likely using Growl 1.2.2 or below on 10.7 or 10.8. What's happened is 
that there is an update, so Growl tells you about that. If you go to the Growl 
website at the top right is a button that says "An update is available, click 
here for more information" 

That takes you to this page http://growl.info/growlupdateavailable which 
explains your options. You'll need to address things in some way, either by 
removing Growl 1.2.2 and installing Growl 2.1 from the app store, removing the 
update check, or some other option.
