The framework references GUI code in places in case Growl isn't installed/running/incompatible versions, so thats likely the problem, pretty sure you can't start gui from the account/place your helper is running. If that is the case, and you can't set it so it can pop GUI up, there are a couple options since Growl is all GNTP based now, GrowlNotify, our command line tool has no such gui code, or other third party GNTP implementations in various scripting languages could be bundled and called out to.
