Which version of Growl do you have, Growl from the Mac App Store sits in
the applications folder (GrowlMail is a different app), older versions of
Growl are a Preference Pane.

Growl is a way to provide notifications, you can try enabling Growl after
start and testing to see if you are getting any slow downs

You can also check to see if your software is updated

Also in your console it might help with the messages

Why Open the Web?

Despite the connecting purpose of the Web, it is not entirely open to all
of its users. When used correctly, HTML documents can be displayed across
platforms and devices. However, many devices are excluded access to Web
content.
