At work, I have two external displays, each with different resolutions. Each morning, I plug the displays into the same ports in the same order. However, Growl appears to assign them screen identifiers arbitrarily, so I have to regularly readjust my display style preferences accordingly to get notifications to appear on the screens I want them to.
