I was answering your questions in order, so yes it limits you to running
1.2.2 since you're on 10.6.8. By saying "you could make a plugin" the
implication is that there is no plugin already, or I would have said "you
can use this plugin".

There is no compatibility mode because for 80% of people it did not work.
It was not worth keeping something which just did not work. It was better
to make a stable solution going forward rather than spend time trying to
make something work which would not.
