I would certainly like to know more myself. I still have access to files on my old machine. But I have not been able to find any preferences stored anywhere for Growl. If I could find those, that might lead me to a solution.
This morning, as usual, I opened my desktop email client which was shut down overnight, and checked for new messages of which there were about 50. And I had to wait while 50 new Growl boxes spawned on my screen starting from the lower left corner and then each one disappeared after a few seconds. Previously, all notifications appeared one at a time at the bottom of my screen, taking up little vertical space because they were almost as wide as my screen. That was what I observed every day for years so I am very sure of what was happening.
