Hello Chris,
Many thanks for your answer. Here follow my results:

Some ideas:
- Check in the Console application first to see if there are any logs.
Unfortunately, I did not notice anything special about Unison and Growl
notifications in my console.
- Next I would try to figure out how Unison was notifying you. Ideally it would
be easy to reproduce. I wouldn't think it's Growl's issue itself due to the
other apps notifying.
- You can use the Growl Version Detective application to figure out which Growl
framework is included with Unison. Let us know the version.
Good idea.
The detective returned version 1.2.1 for my usual version of Unison GUI (version
2.40.65) that worked for years, and exactly the same Growl framework for most recent
version from http://unison-binaries.inria.fr/ <http://unison-binaries.inria.fr/>
I noticed some other (interesting?) facts:
1- the Detective also revealead that the most recent version (2.2.8) of VLC
Media Player users Growl Framework 1.2.2
=> Similarly I can't get any notifications from VLC 2.2.8, whereas it is
supposed to display one when playing next playlist item.
2- the Detective revealed that Adium uses Growl Framework 2.0.1
=> notifications diplay perfectly
I tend to conclude that compatibility with "older" Growl framework (<1.3 ?) is
broken on my system (macOS 10.12.6)
Nevertheless, moving Growl 2.1.3 to the trash and reinstalling it from the Mac
App Store did fix anything.
Any idea?
Regards,
-Yann.

Hello,
This message to find some of your help:
For years, I used to get Growl notifications from the GUI for Unison.
I did not change the application which is still my "old" version 2.40.69 of
the GUI.
Then I tried to download a more recent version of GUI from
http://unison-binaries.inria.fr/ <http://unison-binaries.inria.fr/>
The result is still the same:
- although they are enable, I can't get any notifications during the
(correct) work of Unison
(As I remember those notifications were generated only when the app window
was not the front-most window).
- when I remove Unison from Growl (with backspace in preference pane
"Applications") the Unison application is correctly registered again at next
launch.
- I can't see anything from Unison in Growl history either
- of course Growl is running and other applications like HardwareGrowler or
GrowlTunes are still displaying notifications
I've no idea where to search to find what is going wrong.
Is there, for instance, a log file for Growl where I could read connections
with the application Unison and maybe failed attempts to display a notification?
Thank you.
-Yann.
