If you are using protobufs, the easiest way to approach this would be to use the oneof <https://developers.google.com/protocol-buffers/docs/proto#oneof> feature.
Oneof allows you to specify a request type that is "one of" connectReq/cliMsg/serverMsgRes. Likewise, your response type can be specified as "one of" connectRes/cliMsgRes/serverMsgReq.
