You might consider using GRPC web <https://github.com/grpc/grpc-web> and 
writing an excel add-in with the JavaScript APIs 
<https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office/dev/add-ins/excel/excel-add-ins-overview>.
 
I haven't personally tried it, but it seems like they should work together 
and would support non-windows platforms.
