Applying Aleksejs patch gives a successful compile and test of the 
package on my Intel Core 2 Duo Mac 10.4.10

gcc --version
i686-apple-darwin8-gcc-4.0.1 (GCC) 4.0.1 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 5363)
