well if thats the case then i guess.. something like the tensioners/pulley werent aligned properly and wore out the belt.. maybe the timing belt cover was rubbing on the belt..
 
where are you located? it "may" be cheaper to buy an engine then repair it.. but i guess you wont know until you pull the head off the block and check out the damage.

Car is a RS model that was complied by mitsubishi australia , when i bought it in 2001 it had a genuine 27,000 on it

eeekkk thats not good..judging from the 87km its a jap spec? If so then i think it would of done more then 87km and just been turned bak. normally u do a major service at 80-100km and change the timing belt.
 
if you've done a timing belt then more then likely you have dropped afew valves into the piston(s).. you could b lucky and only bent valves.. but you wont know until you pull the head off..

last Friday the timing belt on my VR4 broke at 87.000 ks, has this hppened to anybody else? If so are the 4G63 engine designed to not break anything? or do thry like to bend valves & hole pistons? i was'nt driving it hard at the time just crusing along at 50-60 ks, any advice is welcomed.
