Hi Everyone,

As a result of the core options discussion, here are some of the decisions that
the Globus team has made and some of the corresponding timelines.

The Globus team is planning to implement the latest WSRF/WSN/WSA spec upgrade.
The primary reasons are twofold:

    1) The spec upgrade is required for compliance with some OGF profiles
(E.g.OGSA WSRF Basic Profile, OGSA Basic Security profile).
    2) The upgrade will ease the effort for those who are developing services
to support multiple platforms (e.g. Globus and UNICORE).

Work on the upgrade has already begun and the target is the 4.2 release,
currently scheduled for late Summer, early Fall (but see below).

Based on user guidance, the Globus team has decided to evaluate a potential
Axis-2 platform upgrade in more detail
-- how much work would be required to upgrade the Globus Toolkit.
-- what would be the impact on the user community (benefits as well as any
anticipated difficulties)

The Axis-2 evaluation is scheduled to start in approximately another week and
is targeted to be finished by the end of the month. This work will involve
prototyping & testing GT Java WS Core with Axis 2 and is described here:
http://bugzilla.globus.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=5356 . If after the
evaluation, there is a decision to move to Axis-2 for the 4.2 release, this
could delay the 4.2 release date by several months (TBD based on the
evaluation).

More details on the spec upgrade are available on the links at
http://dev.globus.org/wiki/Java_WS_Core/SpecificationUpgrade.

Thank you again for your contributions,

Dan, Rachana, Charles, Ravi, Joe and the rest of the Globus team.
