There is a solution to this in the caGrid software. It is called
caGrid Transfer. It is globus based but uses http to transfer the data,
i.e. requiring no external setup of gridftp and is also cross platform.

Subject: [gt-user] rft and http

Hi all

I was just wondering whether it was possible to use rft to transfer
files from http addresses and local files or rft only support 3rd party
gridftp transfers? If so why is this?
