The early 4.1.x did not feature the spec upgrade. But definitely,
when 4.2.0 comes out they are going to be wire incompatible.

No, I don't think so. GT4.1+ is incompatible (on the wire) with
GT4.0. This is due a spec upgrade that was recently completed. You
can read about this in the GT4.1+ development documentation. For
