When i was learning this stuff, I practiced slicing and splitting of
work through experimenting an implementation of POVRAY application.This
primary job of the Povray is to create a movie from a scene and some
basic input files describing the contents of the movie.
May be it is a simple and easy starting point application.
For Complex workflow based apps you can try, Montage, and Blender etc.
