That's because of many reasons, of which the most important two are: - Bzr rembembers that you wrote the patch, and, if you want to prove later that this is your work, it's far more traceable this way. Ohloh.net, for instance, works only with merge requests
- If, for any reason, your patch is not applied immediately and someone changes trunk, it can happen that the patch is refused because of the changes in the code.
