You aren't missing anything. At the moment it is not possible. (Nobody
hadn't done it before)
Would you elaborate the idea behind your plugin? I need a real, nifty
use case for opening a feature request/implementing it. :-) (Maybe you
don't need to add a widget which will do that in more user friendlier way)
