We're already doing something like that. You have to install also the 
gnome-panel applet called hamster (which is a time tracker).
GTG has a plugin for hamster (and hamster has just started to read GTG tasks), 
so when you open a task in GTG you are given the possibility to start it in 
hamster.
Hamster will keep track of the time you've been working on that. If you re-open 
the same GTG task after (with the plugin still loaded), it will show you the 
cumulative time you've been working on that.
