I wanted to change the text color and background color for the entire
thing, in which case use of tags could conceivably be done but would be
very cumbersome at least.

Looks like my new glasses aren't working 8-)

Have I missed the point though, isn't what you want to do done with tags
or are you trying to change the colours for particular states of widget?
