Kind of related: if you want to do funky setuid stuff with GLib/GTK+,
take a look at

http://people.debian.org/~rleigh/schroot-0.1.0.tar.bz2

The core functionality is in schroot/sbuild-session.c.  You could
easily adapt this to your needs.  This is basically a GObject-based
wrapper around the Linux-PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules)
library, and is pretty flexible.
