Yes, that is one of the reasons GIO exists in the first place. HTTP support is still being worked on for both Windows and *nix, but should be in a somewhat usable state now. You may want to look over your code and check for warning and/or errors that may be occurring to see what isn't working. Some things just don't work yet, however, like setting attributes on files and folders via GVFS on *nix. Bugs should be reported under GIO when using HTTP on Windows, and GVFS's HTTP-backend when using HTTP on Linux. Tor Lillqvist is working on the Windows side of things, while Christian Kellner is working on the HTTP support for GVFS.
