Easiest way to find out is probably to spin yourself up a newer OS (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise" or 13.10 "Saucy", or maybe Debian Wheezy, which is what I use), either on a spare bit of hardware or in a virtual machine. Then try building inside that. Use nothing but the OS-provided packages, see how it goes. Compare.
