Of course, just because GObject is implemented in C, it doesn't mean one has to write C code to use it. Take a look at Vala, for example. Even with no prior knowledge of C#, it was easy to pick up. Last but not least search for "performance problem" on the GTK list's > and the same for the QT lists.
