I just discovered (by way of missing a usual dependency in my jhbuild moduleset) that automake fails on Gtk+ (master) if gobject-introspection hasn't been built.
The actual error is that HAVE_INTROSPECTION (used in gdk/Makefile.am and gtk/Makefile.am) isn't an AM_CONDITIONAL. Should we have a copy of introspection.m4 in the m4 directory?
