It could well be down to hardware as I put the computer together myself and the memory was probably the cheapest available but after rebooting it still failed at the same place. I did an apt-get upgrade which upgraded gcc-3.3-2 to gcc-3.3-3 and that fixed the problem but wether the problem was all down to gcc or was a symptom of dodgy hardware I'm not sure so I would be interested if anyone else out there experienced the same problem.
