I have negative feelings towards gtk2 as well, though I could live with
the look once things are configured.

Maybe there is no more gtk1 version and they moved to gtk2. That would
explain dropping the gtk1 version.

If you think you could live with gaim, you could try ayttm. Not sure how
the irc support is, but IMHO gaim's was quite poor.

I believe Gtk1 had some bad locale problems (gaim people claim) and a
list bug that, for example, causes gqview to crash if you delete the
last file in the list and then try to use certain commands when the
"pointer" still hangs in that empty space (Where it stays after delete.
This is the bug part.).

I would recommend trying the curses ones like irssi or epic (but not bx
unless you can unfsck it first). There's also some effort going toward a
gtk interface to irssi.

I personally use tirc. It is rather spartan but has quite good vi
keybindings and history which save me a lot of frustration while editing
text.
