Basically, autoconf/automake was broken and noone knew how to fix it.
Noone but me could compile the thing!
The advantage of switching is that metaconfig is vastly superior
to autoconf in design. However, it is a project that has not been
maintained since 1997, so there are a few rough edges nowadays because
systems have continued to evolve nonetheless...
