Hi, Folks.
I was reminded again to mention this by the recent posts about the program icons for gtk-gnutella.
While watching TV recently, I saw an add for the Nintendo Gamecube, which has an icon made of a three-dimentional square (i.e., a cube), but they managed to make a really nice letter 'G' appear in the middle of the cube, and do it in such a way that it shows up very nicely even when in a low-resolution representation.
I'd like to suggest that we make an attempt to create a better icon for the program when it has been minimized, and that it be made to look something like the Nintendo icon. Perhaps it could be made to have a double G, for Gtk-Gnutella (i.e., "GG or G-G"), so that it's not a direct ripoff of the Nintendo icon.
While I do not want to disparage our current icons, especially as I have no artistic ability at all, I think our program icon in particular is not up to the quality I would expect from a program that has perhaps thousands of users. All the commercial programs that I have purchased have very good icons, which only use a small amount of memory, yet they look very good, and it's clear from looking at them what they represent.
I think the double G would quickly remind people of what program it represents, and that we just need a more professional looking icon. For those of you who want to look at the Nintendo icon, it can be found at
Actually, the icon used in the TV commercial was much larger, and was a metallic blue-gray colored cube on a light background. I have not been able to find that exact icon anywhere on the net, but at least the link above does show the basic icon, and perhaps might give the more artistic of our members some ideas.
I'd be interested if anyone could build us a more commercial looking icon that we could use for when the program is minimized. If I had the skills myself, I'd give it a try, but it seems that all my artistic talent ended up in the musical abilities, and my drawing is about at the level of a 4-year old.
Regards,
