This is difficult to answer or to investigate because you don't tell
which frontend or mode you use and how long it takes until GTKG uses
a lot of memory. The memory usage depends on *a lot* of factors e.g.,
number of downloads, uploads, shared files, entries in
~/.gtk-gnutella/{parq,downloads,fileinfo} etc. From my perspective
GTKG (at least in leaf mode) seems to use a little less memory
currently. You could try compiling with -DTRACK_ZALLOC to check whether
there are any significant memory leaks detected.

Leaf mode should surely use far less memory than Ultrapeer mode. The
GTK+ 1.2 frontend doesn't need as much memory as GTK+ 2.x.
