It appears the distro was upgraded to debian etch while gtk-gnutella was 
running and pango was switched to new version. So this was a transient 
installation problem not specific to gtk-gnutella - thank you for the 
suggestions.

When recompiled against new gtk and pango, it does not crash on Hangul.

But my default window manager crashed - but that's another story :)
