Thanks for the writeup Bill. I've not noticed any strange effects (yet). I got the idea from Azureus (which has had this as a configurable option for quite a long time now), and it solves my problem perfectly. I always compile from the svn tree, so I have no problem maintaining a patch in my own source for eternity if I have to.
