Hehehe... GTK+: The POSIX of GUIs. I like that.
No, Gtk+ is nothing like POSIX. It is simply a GUI toolkit, just
like Tk (of Tcl/Tk fame), Motif, or Qt (of KDE fame). It is used to make
writing X-Window programs easier.
It was originally created for the Gimp, a Photoshop-like program
for Unix (www.gimp.org). But it was so cool that people started using it
for other things. Since then, it has been ported to other, non-Unix
operating systems and is now being used in projects like Netscape 6 and
Gnome (www.gnome.org).
This is actually a good question... 10 years from now, when
everyone is running Gnome on top of Linux, this sort of stuff will be good
history :). It should be archived somewhere...(?)
