A last alternative that wasn't mentioned here yet would be to install the
libraries in your system to where the old versions used to be (probably
/usr/lib). I personally think that this is more consistent with the
directory policies of your distribution, though this is really a matter of
taste. To do that, run

        ./configure --prefix=/usr (the default is /usr/local)
