downloaded gtk+-1.2.8, but forgot glib-1.2.8. Will
check.

If you are using gnu make 3.79, I vaguely remember a
post mentioning this as a
bug in gnu make 3.79. Try either upgrading to
gtk+1.2.8 or use a different
version of gnu make if you are indeed using gnu make

A good way to search the mailing lists that I've
found is to download them,
uncompress them, and then egrep them for keyword(s).
Once you've found a match
then you can follow the threads via the mailing list
