Why would you need a function to do what you can want directly ? The
data of a widget aren't private, I think. You should not modify it,
because you can't do what the widget can with a function which do that
properly (is this clear ?). But, there's nothing wrong to access the
data of a widget. And you need this in very common cases, like when
you create a GtkFileSelection, or when you need the title of a window
:-)
