GtkPlot and GtkDrawingArea

Does anyone know how to use a gtkplot to draw onto a gtkdrawing area?  I've
used gtk_plot_set_drawable(GTK_PLOT(active_plot),
GTK_WIDGET(drawing_area)->window) and all I get is a blank drawing area.
Any ideas as to where I've gone wrong would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks
