its a "GUI design principle" that i believe is intended to help the
user see where the "focus" for mouse operations will be. i really
dislike it as a general mode of operation and wish it was switchable
on and off.

meanwhile, i wonder why so many people seemd unable to turn off
"co-generation" of text and HTML versions of their email, thus
clogging the net with more than twice the amount of traffic they would
otherwise be generating.
