Back in the old days, every Sun system came with a box loaded with
manuals. One of them was the "Open Look graphical user interface
application style guidelines". Allthough Open Look itself is no longer
in use, many of the examples and guidelines in it the book are still
valid today, so if you can grab a copy of the book, do it!
