Typically I build all autoconf'ed packages outside of their source tree.
For example, my directory looks like this:
gtk+-1.3.5/
gtk+-1.3.5-build/
This failed to compile things in tests/
I had to modify the INCLUDES line in the generated tests/Makefile to
include -I$(top_srcdir)/gdk so that testsocket.c could find x11/gdmk.h.
I didn't bother trying to patch Makefile.am at this point as somewhat short
of time, so I reverted back to building inside the source tree.
That failed as well.
The contrib/gdk-pixbuf-xlib Makefile failed to have -I/usr/X11R6/include on
it's INCLUDES line.
[Please note, I'm not going to create an account just to submit a fucking
bug report. That has got to be the most asinine thing I have ever seen.]
